Italian oil major ENI has secured the rights to three offshore oil fields in Mexico, with combined potential reserves of around 800 million barrels of oil.

The offshore oil and gas firm said in a statement that they had won 100% shares in the Amoca, Mitzon and Teocalli fields, located in Campeche Bay, offshore Mexico.

ENI said that the oil and gas fields are all located in shallow water, around 20 to 40 meters in depth, and have estimated reserves in the region of 800 million barrels of oil and 480 billion cubic feet of associated gas.

Mexico’s latest offshore licensing round has been its most competitive, since its government relaxed laws in 2014, preventing foreign oil and gas companies from operating within its waters.

The licences will continue ENI’s winning streak, only a month after it discovered an elephant gas field offshore Egypt.

The Zohr is the largest gas field ever to be found in the Mediterranean, with estimated reserves around 30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
