The Derrick is the tower used in drilling to fix all hoisting equipment to, allowing the driller to raise and lower large sections of drill pipe.

The Derrick can be broken down into different sections and parts, with each getting its own name, eg Gin Pole, Crown, Water Table, Monkey Board etc.

The term ‘Derrick’ is thought to derive from the wooden structure used to hold a hangman’s noose from during an execution, which in turn got its name from an English executioner Thomas Derrick.
