A Rotary Table is a piece of equipment used in drilling to spin the drillstring to enable the drilling of a bore hole.
It is located in the centre of the drill floor, and allows the drillstring to pass through.
Once the drill crew have attached further drill pipe to the string, the driller will power the rotary table to start the spinning motion.
The rotary table will pass the rotary motion to the kelly bushing in turn to the kelly before finally the drill string, allowing the bore hole to be drilled.
Rotary tables have now become more of a backup method of powering a drill string, as top drives have taken over this role on most rigs.
