Shell Closes Key Nigerian Pipeline Due To Leak

Nigeria experienced a disruption in oil export activity after Shell closed down a key pipeline after discovering a leak. The pipeline carries Bonny Light, one of the country’s primary export grades.

Export levels are typically six cargoes of crude or 180,000 b/oe daily. A spokesperson for the country confirmed that no force majeure had been declared against the grade and said that the company’s Nigerian business wing, SPDC, was investigating possible sources of the leak. The country suffers from rampant levels of oil theft, and earlier this year Shell said that it was posting losses of almost $1 billion for 2013 because of disruptions and theft in its Nigerian operation.
